Hokusai's Umezawa Marsh in Sagami Province
Umezawa Marsh in Sagami Province, Katsushika Hokusai, c. 1830–1832. In this tranquil scene from Edo-period Japan, five graceful cranes gather beside a stream while two others soar toward Mount Fuji. Rolling green hills, drifting clouds, and delicate shades of blue create an atmosphere of extraordinary peace.
The print belongs to Hokusai's celebrated Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Unlike many other works in the series, this landscape contains no people or buildings. Curiously, Umezawa was actually known for its busy travelers and teahouses. Hokusai transformed it into an idyllic wilderness, even introducing cranes that were not found there.
In Japanese tradition, cranes symbolize longevity and good fortune. According to legend, cranes can live for a thousand years. Their presence alongside the sacred Mount Fuji gives this beautiful landscape an additional meaning: a wish for long life and happiness.
