Kamschatkan Bighorn Tote Bag

Kamschatkan Bighorn, illustrated by Joseph Smit, from Richard Lydekker's Wild Oxen, Sheep & Goats of All Lands, Living and Extinct (1898), plate XVIIA. Hand-colored lithograph published by Rowland Ward Ltd., London.

The Kamschatkan bighorn, now known as the Kamchatka snow sheep (Ovis nivicola nivicola), inhabits the steep mountains and rocky slopes of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. Its specialized hooves provide traction on uneven terrain, allowing it to navigate narrow ledges and escape predators across rugged cliffs. Mature males, called rams, develop massive curling horns that grow throughout their lives and are used in contests for dominance during the autumn breeding season. Snow sheep endure long Siberian winters, feeding on grasses, lichens, mosses, and willow shoots. Females generally give birth to a single lamb in late spring or early summer.
