Porcupinefish Tote Bag
The Porcupine Diodon (Diodon hystrix), from George Shaw's The Naturalist's Miscellany, volume 5, plate 151 (1793). Hand-colored natural-history illustration by Frederick Polydore Nodder.
This eighteenth-century zoological illustration depicts the porcupinefish, a fascinating marine creature covered in long, sharp spines. Its rounded body, prominent eyes, intricate brown markings, and orange fins create a striking example of early natural-history illustration.
Porcupinefish belong to the family Diodontidae. When threatened, they rapidly swallow water, inflating their bodies into nearly spherical shapes and causing their spines to project outward. This remarkable defense makes them difficult for predators to swallow.
In addition to their formidable appearance, porcupinefish are skilled hunters of hard-shelled marine animals, including crabs, sea urchins, and mollusks. Their powerful jaws contain fused teeth that enable them to crush the shells of their prey.
