The Argus Flounder Tote Bag
The Argus Flounder, or Whitish Flounder, from George Shaw's The Naturalist's Miscellany (1789–1813), published in London by Nodder & Co. This tote features a modern rendering inspired by the original hand-colored natural-history illustration.
The Argus Flounder is distinguished by its extraordinary markings: bright yellow spots surrounded by brilliant blue rings against a pale, speckled body. Its vivid coloration gives the fish an almost jewel-like appearance.
Like other flatfishes, flounders undergo a remarkable transformation during development. One eye migrates to the opposite side of the head, allowing both eyes to face upward when the fish rests on the seabed.
